New online learning module - Exploring Ata and Oho

The new online learning module Exploring Ata and Oho is a 30-minute self-directed learning module to support teachers and kaiako in delivering the Ata and Oho social-emotional learning resource in their classroom.
What are Ata and Oho?
A collection of cards and activities for teaching and learning social and emotional skills, knowledge, and strategies.
What is the module about?
It will help you use the Ata and Oho activities with your ākonga, demonstrating six examples of how to use social and emotional learning to get to know your ākonga better and design a meaningful local curriculum with them.
Who is this module for?
It's designed for kaiako who work with students in years 4-10, but is relevant to all ākonga and can be used flexibly across all year levels. We welcome and encourage all kaiako to get familiar with using Ata and Oho.

Cyber Skills Aotearoa - Information Privacy and Security course available now

Grok Academy and CORE Education have created Cyber Skills Aotearoa, a programme to develop cyber security skills and dispositions in ākonga in Years 6-13.
Cyber Skills Aotearoa consists of classroom-ready activities and challenges that could be used within Hangarau Matihiko | Digital Technologies programmes and to raise awareness of cyber security careers.
The first course from the Cyber Skills Aotearoa programme: Information Privacy and Security is out now.
The Information Privacy and Security course covers:
- purposeful sharing
- password security
- password reuse and multi-factor authentication (MFA)
- phishing and scams
- careers in cyber security.
The course is free for Years 9-13 and is available in both English and te reo Māori.

The Year 6-8 course is coming soon.
Kaiako can also request sets of professionally printed cyber cards - a useful classroom resource to engage ākonga in rich discussions about online privacy and security.

English and maths learning areas released
15/5/2023
English and mathematics and statistics are the second and third learning areas to be released as part of the wider refresh of The New Zealand Curriculum.
They are now available for you to explore and use on the Curriculum Refresh website.
Schools have until the beginning of 2027 before they must use them.

The supports for Te ao tangata | social sciences learning area (released in 2022) have also been released:

Support for English and maths will be available later in 2023.

Changes to legislative requirements for school boards

The New Zealand Curriculum is being refreshed, and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa redesigned. The mathematics, English, te reo Māori and Pāngarau learning areas in each curriculum will need to be implemented in 2026. The remaining learning areas will need to be implemented in 2027.
School boards have new legislative requirements that took effect on 1 January 2023. The Ministry of Education has provided guidance to help you manage the transition period until the new curricula are in place.

Curriculum and NCEA rollout slowed
19/4/2023
On 19 April 2023 Minister of Education, Jan Tinetti announced the Government is prioritising maths, literacy, te reo Māori and pāngarau learning while shifting the timeframes of other changes to NCEA and the national curriculum.

This decision is about listening to what kaiako and leaders have told us they need and making sure they are fully prepared to implement the changes confidently.

Minimising the use of physical restraint in New Zealand schools and kura - Mandatory learning module

New rules and guidelines on understanding ākonga distress and minimising the use of physical restraint in schools came into effect on 7 February 2023. The new guidelines were created in response to changes in the Education and Training Act 2020 and schools' requests for clearer rules around physical restraint and contact.

Mandatory learning module
All kaiako and authorised staff must complete the online learning module Physical Restraint - Understanding the Rules and Guidelines by 7 February 2024.
To complete the training, kaiako and authorised staff will need an Education Sector Logon (ESL).
- So far, almost 4,000 school staff have completed the module.
- The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with more than 90% of people giving the module a 4- or 5-star rating.
More online modules will be delivered throughout 2023 and 2024.
Cyber Skills Aotearoa Term 2 2023

Grok Academy and CORE Education have created Cyber Skills Aotearoa, a programme to help develop cyber security skills and dispositions in ākonga in Years 6-13. The programme provides free resources and support to teachers and kaiako.
Cybersecurity posters and other offline activities are also available to help students learn about information security. In Term 2 of 2023, free online courses will be released that will delve into cybersecurity topics in more detail. The courses and offline resources are available in both English and Te Reo Māori.
Teachers can also request sets of professionally printed cyber cards - a useful classroom resource to engage students in rich discussions about online privacy and security.

Cyber Skills Aotearoa is a programme to develop cyber security skills and dispositions in ākonga in Years 6-13. The programme provides free resources and support to teachers.
Cyber Skills Aotearoa opens with CyberComp - an online competition designed to take around 45 minutes. CyberComp will be open between 27 February and 24 March 2023.
Cybersecurity posters and other offline activities are also available to help students learn about information security. Free online courses will be released in Term 2 that will delve into cybersecurity topics in more detail. The resources are available in both English and Māori Medium.
Teachers can register their students for CyberComp now and can also request sets of professionally printed cyber cards - a useful classroom resource to engage students in rich discussions about online privacy and security.

Redesigning Te Marautanga o Aotearoa

E whakahoungia ana Te Marautanga o Aotearoa ki te whakaata i te marautanga nō konei, kua hua mai i te ao Māori, kua ara mai i te anga huatau nei ko Te Tamaiti Hei Raukura. Ka haere tēnei whakahou ā ngā tau e 5 e tū mai ana.
Te Marautanga o Aotearoa is being redesigned to reflect a more indigenous curriculum, grounded in te ao Māori, based on the conceptual framework Te Tamaiti Hei Raukura. The redesign will take place over the next 5 years.

The programme provides free resources and support to teachers. Cyber Skills Aotearoa opens with CyberComp - an online competition designed to take around 45 minutes. CyberComp will be open between 27 October and 11 November 2022.
